Class Information
We cover big game animals – elk, bear, and deer. You will learn their habits, caping, field dressing, boning, tracking and stalking. Hands-on learning is key to developing into a great guide and to cover some of the material we will be harvesting a buffalo – and have fun doing it!
In packing, you will learn how to work with horses and mules from the ground up, hands-on. Riding, caring for stock, care of tack, pulling pack strings, and balancing pack loads to name a few. You will learn about both riding and pack saddles, how to set up camps, proper camp environment, and how to care for your clients. We cover outdoor cooking using cast iron cookware, and you will learn meal preparation and menu planning.
In addition to camping, cooking and packing, you will also learn emergency horse shoeing, basic back country veterinary care, become certified in Red Cross First Aid and CPR, and Hunter Education. You will learn rules and regulations set by the state, how to work with the public and other parts of the business.
The course lasts about four weeks. With very little reading, the course material is learned by hands-on methods, we have found first hand experience to be the best teacher. If you love the outdoors as much as we do, this could be the school for you. Upon enrollment we will send you a tuition receipt, equipment list and class schedule. Class is held during July and August and fills quickly. Please contact us as early as possible.

I grew up in Tennessee and always had the dream of one day becoming a hunting guide. After taking the leap to pursue my dream, I have never forgotten those words.
I am 53 years old and am literally ” living the dream”. I love to hunt, and I love to fish, there is no other profession I would rather be doing.
I am a Professional hunting guide in Montana as well as a Charter fishing boat Captain during the summer month’s in Destin, FL
Prior to becoming a Professional guide, I thought about my passion of wanting to hunt big game out west. After receiving the opportunity of a life time, I packed up and headed to northwest Montana for guide school.
From navigating in the mountains, packing horses, learning wilderness survival, handling clients, and dealing with meat in the bush, Big Sky Packer and Guide school has the most experienced, skilled and professional instructors you will find. During my time at guide school, I gained not only guiding skills, but amazing experiences and memories that will last a life time.
I have been guiding at Elk Creek Outfitting for 3 seasons, and Brent (Boss) Fitchett is by far the best man I have ever worked for, and in my opinion, runs the most top notch outfit in the country!
For those of you who have wanted to pursue your dream but have been held back by excuses or your own fears, I am here as a reminder to tell you, that you can do whatever you want to do, and get someone to pay you to do it.

Dates and Prices
Now booking for July 2021
Tuition is $4,500. This includes your Big Sky Packer and Guide School manual, all meals, lodging, and transportation to and from the airport, if you are flying in.
A personal equipment list will be sent upon enrollment. A deposit of $500 is required with enrollment to be submitted with your application. Balance is due upon arrival at school.
Pay in full by June 15th and receive a $250 discount.
After graduation, we provide a list of summer recreation and hunting guide opportunities to help you begin your new and exciting career in the outdoors recreation field.
